The internet is filled with sites and they are good and bad. Some have beenknown for a long time and some still struggle to get the respect and fame they think they deserve.

Although not all your visitors are web design professional they still can puttheir finger on a good site and sense the ones that are not that ok. But howcan you convince people your site deserves to be known and respected? How canyou make them feel your site is better than other thousands they could find onthe same subject?

Elegant design

You need a nice looking site. Don’t overdo this either, but try to offer yoursite a unique and nice feeling. Branding is also important. Try to come up witha nice logo.

Create a nice layout, try to have a consistent colour theme and use nice fonts.Don’t use templates unless they are unique and you have got the only copy. There’snothing worse for your “respected” site than a theme people have seen for 50times before.

Avoid animated gifs, annoying backgrounds and music.

Good and interesting content

Don’t just throw links and downloads. Nowadays people need more, not to mentionthe search engines would love your site more if you offer them some content.Organize the content logically and update it frequently.

Good way to advertise

We all need to live and some try to do this from the site they run. It’s ok tohave an ad campaign or two. Just don’t over do it. Don’t fill your pages withmany banners and advertising links. They would make people lose respect for younot to mention ruin the entire layout.

A good behaviour online

Don’t think people cannot trace you just because you are “anonymous” online.wrong. if someone wants to trace you

all the way to your lair, there’s nothingyou can do against it. But you can use this in order to get known, in a positivemanner.

Post in forums and respect. People will come to know you eventually from seeingyour good posts and nice behaviour. When they’ll see your site this could meanmore visitors and perhaps some clients that are almost convinced you really meanbusiness.

Respect towards your visitors

Don’t treat your visitors bad, offer them a pleasant experience and make themlove the place. Offer them a feed-back form and respond as fast as possible toany questions they might ask. Word of mouth is a serious promotion. Use it inyour behalf.

Good organization

Don’t take prisoners, let people know what’s on your site and how they can reachthe information they are looking for. A sitemap is a good thing to add to yoursite if you’ve got more pages. It’s also a good trick for the search enginesoptimization. Have a good navigation system and don’t make people have to guesswhat’s going on in your little place online.

About information and contact page

For a business and even a personal page, a good about and contact page can dowonders. When people see a nice site they tend to want to know something moreabout the person running it or the business presenting it. And a contact pageis a must on every site. For a business offer phone numbers and addresses, fora personal page at least an email address.

Updates

Frequent updates make search engines love you, not to mention your visitors. If you cannot update the information on a daily basis, try at least a monthlyupdate.

Get ready to spend some time and effort

While designing your website, you cannot afford to make room for any flawsthat might be taken seriously by the users. There is, for sure, not a lack of websites which inadvertently contain serious mistakes, and worse still people fail to attribute poor performance of the site to such flaws. The fact is that these potentially crippling pitfalls often seem to be either trivial or marginal, or even not thought of having any say in how the site fares at the end of the day.

Here’s is a concise exposition on some pitfalls which might easily escape yourattention. Or the other way around, you do not deem it worthy of your consideration. But, mind it, these seemingly insignificant aspects of your website can scareyour visitors away and ruin your business reputation beyond redemption.

The flashing up of under construction sign.

Your instance of resorting to under construction sign on your site sends offa wrong signal, tacitly says that you are a struggling beginner. The thumbrule here is that if you find your site not yet ready, do not show it in publicaltogether.

Your site is replete with overuse of technology.

There are some really astounding and cool new technologies available, butit does not necessarily mean that you end using all without assessing theirimpact on usability. It can adversely work against you. Be sure that whenit comes to choose between new technology and simplicity, you opt for thelatter as it is crucial for your website’s functionality.

Inclusion of Visitor Counter on your site.

Visitors commonly do not care enough for the visitors of your site.

However,by virtue of a visitor counter if they witness a low number, they tend tobe distracted. Moreover, a too high number displayed on the counter has thepotential to make it seem like fictitious one. Therefore, it is advisablenot to have visitor counter at the first place.

Your site lacks copyright statements.

Everything you write and create on your site warrants copyright declarations.

So, it is in the fitness of the things to include it on every page of thewebsite, and to make it up-to-date with changing times.

Mindless use of passive verbs.

The more you avoid the use

of passive verbs, the better it would act in yourfavor. Instead, use active verbs as far as practicable as this sort of verblends energy and activism to your site’s copy.

Use of long and cumbersome sentences.

Long sentences are tedious to read for most of the users. So, better makeit short, lucid and simple so as to add to its readability and understandability.

Pages on the site are lengthy .

If the cyber behavior of users is anything to go by, keep your pages briefand concise. People are too often bored of reading of lengthy stuff, so youhave to take into consideration the attention span of users. If you have tosay a lot, you can but do it with a series of well navigated and well explainedlinks.

Not calling visitors to action.

You must give it a thought to incorporate such features on your site. Youshould think over giving a space designated to tell your visitors what youwant them to do next. For example, Sign up for my newsletter, Order now, etc.

Not highlighting the benefits of your products or services. Peoplemake purchases to get rid of pain and to get pleasure out of buying productsand services. So, it is imperative on your part that you help users discernhow your products or services are going to help them lessen their pain andget pleasure in turn.

You site contains typographical and grammatical errors.

Your typographical errors on the site will be noticed by your visitorsin no time. This lapse your behalf is almost always considered as a sign ofa novice, not a professional who is in business trying to make a living. Andto keep such possibility pretty away from haunting you, what you need to dois to be a little serious in approach and a bit careful in methodology.

Hence what can be inferred upon here is that if people are going to believe thatyou do not take your site seriously, they won’t either.

An ecommerce design for a website is a bit more expensive than astandard static website, but for an ecommerce business – aninternet-based business that conducts financial transactionsonline – an ecommerce design for the website is fundamental.

When considering your website development needs, you may wonderif there are easy ways around getting an ecommerce design foryour website since an ecommerce design is more expensive thangetting a site without ecommerce design features, especially iffunds are tight starting out.

There are a few alternatives to an ecommerce design that couldget you by until you can afford the development expense for anecommerce design, but if you take your ecommerce businessseriously, you really do need an ecommerce design because of itsmany advantages over other websites.

As an alternative to an ecommerce design, you could use yourwebsite as a lead generation tool without actually conductingfinancial transactions online. If you use your website for leadgeneration rather than getting an ecommerce design for yourwebsite, you will have many manual tasks to accomplish that willbe time consuming.

You can use a contact form, email, a fax line, or a phone numberto accept orders offering payment options such as sending in acheck or money order or providing a credit card number by phone,if you have a merchant account.

This is not a very good option for you or your customers;however, for more than one reason. Your customers may not takeyour ecommerce business seriously if you do not have an ecommercedesign website that accepts payments online. Online shoppers arealso generally impulse buyers.

If the process of purchasing something from your company is toocumbersome, many will just surf the net and find anotheralternative, so your sales potential will be diminished. You willalso have to manually process orders and payments and matchingthe order to the payment can be a complicated task at times, soyour order fulfillment process might be inefficient.

That results in

poor customer service, angry customers andnegativity against the reputation of your business. Really, it isa vicious circle.

A more beneficial alternative to an ecommerce design is the useof PayPal’s automated payment features. PayPal enables you toplace “Pay Now” buttons on your website which will enable yourcustomers to make online payments to your PayPal account.

This is certainly a better alternative than having no onlinepayment option on your website; however, a website with anecommerce design will likely be much more appealing to yourwebsite visitors.

The benefits of an ecommerce design are that it enables yourcustomers to place orders quickly and easily, especially if youhave a shopping cart feature in your ecommerce design. Multipleproducts or services can be purchased at one time, the order(including tax and shipping) can be automatically totaled, andthe customer can make an online payment for the complete order.

Some ecommerce design features may even send the customer anorder confirmation and if you have shipping tracking built intoyour ecommerce design, you can update your database when an orderships and a tracking confirmation will be automatically sent toyour customers via email so they can keep tabs on the status oftheir order.

The main advantages of an ecommerce design is that it automatedthe sales process, improves customer confidence, increases sales, and saves you loads of time in the order processing and follow-upprocesses.

An ecommerce design might be a bit more costly than other designsin the website development phase, but over the long run, yourecommerce design will pay for itself ten-fold at least inincreased revenues and saved time.

People hate waiting. You know it, I know it, we all know it. Yet people persistently want to add the latest and greatest to their website to be flashy (no pun intended) and to set themselves out from the crowd. But if you go overboard, you’ll not only be set out from the crowd, you’ll also never get a revisit from your website visitors. Why? Because each new effect or “toy” slows down your website. Here are 3 important rules and speed tweaks to keep in mind while developing your next page:

Use Flash sparingly. I’ve seen entire websites done purely in Flash. Well that’s great, but it doesn’t say a thing about their design or programming skills. It can also (depending on connection speed) takes ages to load. Even simple mouse-overs are now done in Flash, when it can very easily be “faked” using background images and CSS. Use it for small things where it can be really effective, otherwise, don’t. For your customer’s sake. Banners and ads can be done in flash. A design rule to think about is, if someone was browsing your site and they had Flash disabled or the plug-in not installed, would it seriously affect their browsing experience? Would any bit of content, functionality or other critical component be seriously affected? If so, you should re-think your Flash usage big time.

Website graphics overload. This one I pay special attention to. Unless you and your entire company has super fast internet connectivity, and you are certain at least 99% of your target audience also has bleeding fast internet, optimise your images! Really, what’s quicker and more effective? A 32-bit colour image at maximum resolution that hinders a page and overcrowds it or an 8-bit (256 colour) decent resolution image that really enhances your site and your visitor’s experience? I hope I don’t have to answer this one for you. My

general rule of thumb is, if you want to use an image and it’s less than 10k-15k, you’re in the good. If it’s over, try cutting down the DPI, the colour bit setting and/or use another format e.g.: GIF to JPG to PNG. People using dial up internet will find it a nuisance, especially if there’s 10+ images over 15kb that need loading, it’s just going to take ages, and if it nearly 7 seconds or over, everyone starts getting impatient really quickly. Oh, and specify your image size (if your web editor hasn’t done so already). This allows your web browser to continue loading and displaying your content while the images themselves are still downloading.

Javascript overkill. JavaScript has it’s place. Heck in the right circumstances, it’s hard to beat. It allows dynamic page rendering, page interaction and user customisation, all from the user’s browser without having to resort to cookies or creating user logins. However, some people like to go overboard, and add butterflies that follow your mouse cursor, or graphical page transition effects and using javascript to pre-load more images for bandwidth consuming mouse-over effects, and other non critical, annoying, in-your-face features. It’s not needed people.

So before you go adding any of the above beyond reason, just remember the web design saying: just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Follow the K.I.S.S principle (Keep It Simple, Stupid) and both your website and it’s visitor’s will reward you. Or, alternatively, if you insist on having a special effects crazy website, offer people a choice. A simpler fewer-graphics-text-version or a Flash driven, multimedia bonanza and let them pick which one they want. Keep track if you wish to go that far. You may be pleasantly surprised at the results.

Marketers today make a strong case for a content management system (CMS), extolling its virtues in no uncertain terms. But it probably makes sense to take a step back and think: does your organization really need an advanced CMS? If your current in-house team is effectively managing your Website, can you justify a CMS investment to your management team? But at the same time, can your existing solution scale quickly enough to handle expected and unexpected growth?

The real issue here is deciding when to stop ad-hoc manual processes and invest in a CMS. And this decision must be based on 3 things: your business goals, the capabilities of your current solution, and the ROI associated with change.

So let’s look at when you should consider a CMS.

Invest in a CMS when:

Your Website looks and reads like a blast from the past

An outdated Website is clearly bad for business. Small Website teams typically comprise of a few HTML and developer experts who present and publish content in the right place with the right design. Hiring more people is not a viable option as work volumes are never consistent and additional costs are hard to justify.

Given a sudden need to scale – like a new branding campaign that mandates style, design, and content changes – delivery timelines become hard to keep. Manual processes will not deliver the desired need for business agility.

Your content information landscape looks like a jungle

Inconsistent categorizing, organizing, and publishing can frustrate business users looking for content. Webmasters may change, but nomenclatures and processes cannot. A clear strategy is thus essential to avoid knowledge silos and mixed-up information architectures.

A CMS can help you:

•	Maintain consistency across Website pages

•	Control design—and more importantly branding—to the level desired with style sheets, templates, and more

•	Assure a consistent, professional experience for visitors, regardless of who is responsible for content

Your organization struggles to put up a simple press release

It is not uncommon to encounter inordinate delays with simple content revisions. Press releases and product updates need to be timely, precise, and deliver value. With the right CMS, your subject matter experts can actively participate in making the Website reflect organizational goals. Without dependency on personnel trained in HTML, you can accelerate Website publishing by giving subject matter experts simple, intuitive tools to easily create, edit and publish content themselves.

Your users constantly complain of missing links

Missing links and Website maintenance struggles are sure signs of the need for a CMS. The right solution can help you maintain essential link integrity, and significantly improve the experience of business users.

Your organization lacks programming and design skills and

expertise

If a developer or external expertise is required to correct simple spelling errors or change Website structure, a CMS can surely help. The right solution empowers your non-technical staff to create and modify content as well as design without programming expertise.

Your organization is unable to manage the information explosion

What part of the burgeoning volume of information is actually valuable? How easily is this accessible to users? Serving and managing content served in multiple forms is another challenge–especially in dealing with blogs, Wikis, or Podcasts.

An effective CMS can:

•	Manage this from a single point of control

•	Quickly identify, tag, compose, and assemble content automatically

•	Reduce information duplication, and encourage content reuse

Your organization struggles to ensure quality and freshness of content

Manual systems are seldom effective in ensuring content quality and freshness. A typical manual process involves:

•	The marketing/communications team tracking down section owners, and requesting content updates

•	Dispatched as a Word document, this content then goes through a long and tedious approval process from various stakeholders

•	The content upload team, in dealing with inconsistencies, shifts the workflow back to the content department

It is easy to see how this process can be inefficient and time-consuming.

A CMS can provide complete system auditing and reporting, giving you the ability to manage and track the history of all work done. Every file can be given a full document lifecycle, including check-in, check-out, versioning, rollback, approvals, and scheduling. Intelligent workflow automation ensures that content passes through the appropriate quality gates before publishing.

You can also use the CMS’s configurable workflows to assign tasks to any person, and that escalate in case defined thresholds are crossed. For example, e-mail alerts can be sent to content owners of specific sections on a Website, to ensure timely section updates. Once these rules are established, you can make sure that section owners are more responsive in assuring content quality and freshness.

Conclusion

If your Web presence is experiencing any of the above difficulties, it is safe to say that a CMS solution is a necessity. As with any technology purchase it is important to factor in the total-cost-of-ownership before investing. But like we’ve all heard many times before, the first step is admitting you have a problem.

No matter how brilliant your website design is, if it is hard to reach the content of your site then your site is as useful as a light house in the desert.

Here are some tips to improve the usability of your website to ensure it serves its functions optimally:

The first method is to make sure the typography of your content is suitable.

If you have large blocks of text, make sure to use CSS to space out the lines accordingly. The longer a single line of text is, the greater the line-height of each line should be. Also, make sure the font size of your text is big enough to read easily. Some sites have 10-pixel-tall text in Verdana font; while that may look neat and tidy, you have to really strain your eyes to read the actual text.

Make it easy for visitors to find content that they want on your site.

If you have thousands of articles on your site and a certain visitor wants to find one single article from that pile, you have to provide a feasible means to enable visitors to do that without hassle. Be it an SQL-driven database

search engine or an index of articles, providing such a feature will make sure your visitors can use your site with ease.

Ensure that your site loads fast if you do not want to lose visitors.

Most internet users will leave a website if it doesn’t load completely within 15 seconds, so make sure the crème de la crème of your website is delivered to the visitors as soon as possible to retain their attention.

Last of all, test each and every link on your site before it goes online.

There is nothing more effective in tarnishing your professional image than broken links, so be very careful about that.

In Summary

1.) The first method is to make sure the

typography of your content is suitable.

2.) Make it easy for visitors to find content

that they want on your site.

3.) Ensure that your site loads fast if you do

not want to lose visitors.

4.) Last of all, test each and every link on your

site before it goes online.

Search engines (SE) play a vital role in helping users find information over the Internet. With the use of certain keywords, users are able to find web pages filtered by search engines in terms of relevance, making it easier for them to find the information they need. With Google alone, billions of search queries are done every month (US). Add that up with queries from other major search engines such as Yahoo and AOL, this massive amount of usage makes search engines the biggest source of traffic for any website.

Seeing how beneficial they can be for websites, the question now is how to appear on the first few pages of the search results for their targeted keywords? People tend to stop browsing search results after a few pages, it is therefore important for websites to come up on the first page of search results. Aside from Search Engine Optimization (off-site SEO in particular), having a search engine friendly (SEF) web design helps boost the search rank of a website.

Search engine friendly web design is aimed at building websites on a framework that is easily read by engines therefore giving them a higher chance on gaining good position in search rankings. Website owners and web designers have become well aware of the importance of building search engine friendly websites, but for those who are relatively new to this concept, here are some things to take note of in order to build an SEF website:

1. Meta tags. Meta tags can be found in the head section of an HTML document. Though meta tags are no longer as influential as they were before in terms of search rankings, they can still boost a websites popularity in search engines. The title tag very much affects on how these engines categorize your website, therefore its important to have a relevant title tag on the pages of your website. The meta keywords and description provide additional information about your web page. Some engines use the meta

description as the information below the link to your web page in search results.

2. Search engine friendly URLs. An example of a search engine friendly URL would be econowebexpress.com/full-feature-list. With keywords listed on the URL, it’s rather SE friendly compared to URLs with random alphanumeric characters and symbols. Not only does it help you boost your search ranking, it’s also easier for your readers to remember.

3. Content. Needless to say, the content of your web page should contain relevant keywords since search engines would rank websites based on the relevance of their content with search keywords.

4. Flash design. Since search engines rely heavily on text content in their indexing, websites made purely or mostly made in flash or may not be considered as search engine friendly web design. Before, content placed in flash are not readable by web spiders, but now there are tweaks on how to optimize flash for search engines.

5. Site map. Having a site map increases your website’s SE friendliness. A better way of making a site map is by using keywords or phrases that is targeted by the said page that you are linking to.

6. Alt tags on images. Since images are not being crawled by web spiders, placing an alt tag on images helps boost ranking since it’s readable by major search engines.

Having a search engine friendly web design helps boost search engine ranking, therefore a concept that should not be taken for granted by website owners and designers. It is a big help in terms of search engine optimization. But since SEO is a very dynamic concept, what may be effective techniques today may no longer be effective tomorrow. The same holds true web the concept of search engine friendly web design. It is best website owners and designers should be updated with the latest concepts in web design and search engine optimization.

There are a couple of key things to look at when starting a hosting company. Basically there are four major factors to look at provided you have the servers, and technical abilities.

1. Site design is the first thing a prospective customer sees!! I have seen some horrible designs for hosting companies. If you think putting some text, links and a logo on a page is enough, you will likely fail before you even realize. You will also notice a lot of companies have a generic template that can be found online at template monster or any other temple site. Avoid these. It is very hard to develop a company image when you look like 134,000 other hosting companies. I suggest put a bit of effort and creativity into a well designed “professional” looking home page for your company. The bottom line is a new customer will not even consider you as their host if they feel you are an armature no matter how great or cheap your packages are.

2. Develop your website as a total package to its clients. Don’t just present your hosting packages and leave it at that. Offer tutorials, articles, support forums etc. These additional services not only provide additional content for you clients, but if developed correctly will bring additional traffic to your site which will potentially lead to more sales.

3 You MUST understand how search engines work. Over 90% of your business will likely come directly from search engine results. Therefore, it is absolutely essential to optimize your site for search engines. You could have the greatest hosting plan in the entire world,

but if no one knows about it, then it’s useless. Do a search on Google for Search Engine Optimization (SEO). You will find tons of great information on how to create a website that is both user friendly and search engine friendly. There are also a countless number of companies out there who offer SEO services. Just be cautious of their offers and do your research first

3. Find your niche. The hosting business as a whole is a huge industry which is very competitive. Your best chance at success is to simply find a market and develop your business to cater to that specific niche. An excellent example of this is http://elite-hosts.org/ who offer hosting and development to those who operate online forums.

Maybe in the early 90’s the idea of “if you build it they will come” might have been true. But in the year 2005 the internet is a far more competitive and complex. place To be successful today, you have to develop a business plan which works from all angles. If you can develop a hosting company which has a professional design, some extra content, search engine friendly and which targets a specific niche, you will have a far greater chance at success Of course there are many other factors to consider as well, but if you can master these four, everything else should fall into place.

Today I spent some time trawling the web with my “buyer’s hat” on looking for a company that provides the music/marketing message-on-hold type of products for our telephone system.

Usually we source suppliers for our business either based upon recommendation or from a client/existing supplier or networking associate; however this time no suitable recommendations were forthcoming. So like many companies looking for huddersfield web designers, new suppliers, in my quest I turned to the web.

A quick google search brought up loads of companies on page one that looked like they may be able to help us and like most people, I immediately went to the top 5 or so websites that were listed in the results.

At this stage of this lesson I’d like to first of all congratulate these companies “for getting their sites placed within the first 5 positions of Google’s search results for my chosen keywords. Your Leeds web designers and search engine marketing techniques have worked and I am a potential customer with money burning a hole in my pocket”.

But oh dear!

The first site I went to, didn’t work in my browser (Fire Fox) so that was the end of that visit.

The second site looked like it had been built by a 10 year old using Microsoft’s Paint application. It did not fill me with a sense of comfort or professionalism and as a result I had a feeling the company was a back-bedroom set up (it might not have been but that was the feeling I got from their website). So again, visit aborted.

The third site had a colour scheme and font arrangement that made my eyes hurt. I’m outta here!

The fourth site whilst acceptable in its look and feel had no information about the company or how to contact them above

and beyond a feedback form. We’re not in the habit of dealing with companies we can’t trace to a real-world location. So that was the end of that visit.

The fifth site whist not entirely to my design tastes, was easy to navigate, and had samples of their products and displayed clear contact and company information including a telephone number. They’d obviously invested well in their website and I should imagine because of this, they get a significantly larger number of en quiries than the 4 companies who were listed above them in Google’s SERPS (Search Engine Results Pages).

I gave them a call and their local rep is coming out to see us next week.

So there’s today’s lesson.

If you intend to make use of the web as a tangible method of marketing your business, approach the task seriously and invest well in your website. Make sure the site functions well, is pleasant and attractive to use and displays clear contact information and calls to action making it easy for the potential customer to make an en query.

To do otherwise will do you more harm than good and will mean your competitor; with a better website, is likely to get all your business.

If you have an existing website that you feel let’s your company down and boosts business for your competitors. Give us a call to discuss how we can turn this situation around for your business.
